Almost 2 years ago, the Maya Train was launched with promises of revolutionizing travel across Mexico. I had the privilege of taking the inaugural ride from Cancun to Mérida on December 16th, 2023. Since then, I’ve embarked on nine journeys covering every open route to assess whether the Maya Train has truly lived up to the hype.
Here’s a recap of my experiences:
Booking and Tickets
Buying tickets for the Maya Train is straightforward. You can purchase them through:
● The official website: trenmaya.gob.mx
● In-person at Mérida’s La Plancha IE Tram Station or Teya Station
● The Tren Maya app, which is available in English and Spanish
However, the app has some issues, such as timing errors on Apple Wallet tickets. I recommend double-checking with the PDF version for accuracy.
Discount policies have been clarified as well. Only Mexican nationals with an INE are eligible for discounted fares. Temporary and permanent residents pay the international tourist rate. IDs are checked consistently before boarding.
Reliability and Comfort
Reliability has been one of the standout features of the Maya Train. Trains run punctually, often to the minute, with only minor delays. The interiors are modern, with premium seats offering added comfort for long journeys. However, the air conditioning can get cold, so pack a hoodie.
Final Thoughts
While the train still faces challenges like limited route availability and infrequent scheduling, it has significantly improved in its first year. The Maya Train is a comfortable, reliable option, although the ADO bus system remains more frequent and affordable. Overall, my Maya Train experience scores a 3.9/5.
