After a year of exploring the Maya Train routes, I’m sharing my honest review to help fellow travelers make the most of their journey.
From booking tickets to navigating the train’s schedule, here’s what you need to know:
The Booking Experience
Ticket purchasing is straightforward, with options to book via the website, app, or in person. However, schedules are only available 30 days in advance, making it tricky to plan long-term. For seamless planning, mix and match train routes, but be cautious of limited same-day return options.
Pro Tip: Stick to the PDF version of your ticket for accurate timing, especially when traveling between Yucatán and Quintana Roo, which are in different time zones.
Journey Highlights
During my trips, I traveled from Mérida’s Teya Station to Playa del Carmen and onward to Tulum Airport. The train’s reliability stood out, with punctual arrivals and comfortable seating. However, last-mile connections, like buses or taxis, can be expensive and inconsistent. Budget for these additional costs to avoid surprises.
Snacks and seating are two areas where preparation pays off. Pack your own snacks, as the onboard food options are limited. For longer journeys, premium seats are worth the extra cost.
Honest Verdict
The Maya Train is a game-changer for travel in Mexico, but it’s not perfect. If you’re prepared for minor inconveniences, the experience is worthwhile. With improvements in scheduling and better last-mile connections, the Maya Train could truly shine.
